Note from the SPJ-IC: What’s Happening Down Under
Our Co-chair Dan Kubiske had a great chat with Peter Greste, Executive Director of the Australian Alliance for Journalists’ Freedom.
It came as quite a surprise to us that Australia does not have any form of press freedom protection either in its Constitution nor in any legislation. The Alliance has drafted a some language for a Media Freedom law, largely based on the PRESS Act that is pending in the US Congress. (And just FYI, the official name of the proposed legislation is Protect Reporters from Exploitative State Spying Act or the PRESS Act.)
The Alliance is also looking at a way to set up a code of ethics for journalists that allows for some accountability when the code is violated. Greste stressed the Alliance does not want any government involvement nor does it want to define who can be a journalist. Rather, he said, they are looking at defining what is good journalism. Greste said the idea is to focus on the process, not the individuals.
For now, the organization is trying to enact a Media Freedom Act and work its way around the complicated issues related to defining (and possibly enforcing) a code of ethics for journalists in a free society.
